Extensions: Do you need planning permission?
Providing the work meets certain rules, planning permission is not required for some common home improvement projects. These are:
* extensions (limited in size).
* porches (limited in size).
* loft conversions (if bats are present you will need to consult Natural England for advice - bats are a protected species).
Projects that meet the rules are within what's known as 'permitted development'. But if you get it wrong, correcting a mistake can be expensive. This new visual guidance for homeowners makes this kind of error less likely. To view the guides click on the type of work you are looking to do. However, if the building is listed or is in a conservation area (or other designated area) you should consult with your local planning authority first.
For more information regarding planning the Planning Portal Website and Direct Gov Website accessed from these links will offer more comprehensive information. If you are planning to carry out 'Building Work' as defined in Regulation 3 of the Building Regulations, then it must comply with the Building Regulations which are seperate to planning applications.

Housing Needs 2009
There is an acute shortage of affordable homes in rural areas of Sussex. This has a significant impact on the sustainability of rural communities. With the high cost of house prices, many local families and single people are forced to move out of the area to find a property they can afford. Without suitable affordable properties in rural areas the social character of the villages change.
Action in rural Sussex employs a small Rural Housing Enabling team who can provide support and impartial advice to Parish Councils and rural communities on how they can get affordable housing that meets the needs of local people. The Sussex Rural Housing Enabling team is led by Tom Warder (Senior Rural Housing Enabler).
Action in rural Sussex was asked by Horsham District to carry out a Housing Needs Survey in November 2008. The survey was delivered by Royal Mail to ALL properties with-in West Chiltington Parish. The aim of the survey was to determine the existing and future housing needs of residents in West Chiltington, particularly those on low or modest incomes. This report identifies the housing needs that is required by local people in West Chiltington and reports on the views of residents regarding an affordable housing development within the parish.
A West Chiltington housing needs exhibition was held in the village hall on the 15th September.
